For the best traces

  • Film down the line

Stand behind the ball, looking at your target. The guided camera shows you where.

  • Keep the phone still

A small tripod is ideal. Keep the whole golfer and the ball in frame.

  • Use slow motion

More frames per second give the smoothest traces and the most exact tempo.

Getting started

What’s the best way to film?

Down the line: stand behind the ball, looking at your target, with your iPhone still (a small tripod is ideal) and the whole golfer and ball in frame. Slow-motion video gives the smoothest traces. The guided camera shows you where to stand and checks the phone is level before you swing. Face-on video can be traced too, but the posture check and swing plane need down-the-line video.

Can I use videos I’ve already filmed?

Yes. Import from Photos and ShotDraw brings in the original video at its full frame rate, finds every shot in it and skips practice swings and waggles. One clip can hold a whole range session.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later. A recent iPhone analyzes fastest. An Android version is in development.

How much does ShotDraw cost?

ShotDraw is free to download. Version 1.0 has no ads, no subscription and no in-app purchases.

Does it work for left-handed golfers?

Yes. Choose your hand when you start, or later in Settings › Golfer. Shot shapes and club path follow it, so a left-hander’s draw curves right.

Traces and numbers

What if a shot isn’t traced, or the trace is off?

Open the shot and choose Edit Trace from the … menu. Drag to the ball under the magnifier and lift; the mark snaps to the ball and the flight refits as you go. If a shot was missed entirely, step to the frame before impact and tap the ball. Some flights can’t be followed automatically, for example against a bright sky or a busy background, and a few marks fix them in seconds.

How accurate are the numbers?

Carry, apex, hang time, launch, start line and curve are estimated from your video, not measured by a launch monitor or radar. Every number is shown with its uncertainty, and carry is about ±15% until you calibrate by entering how high your iPhone was (Settings › Numbers). Spin and roll are modelled, not measured.

Use them to see patterns, like your shape, your dispersion and whether a change made the ball fly higher, rather than as exact yardages. Distances on the Course tab come from your iPhone’s GPS and show the accuracy of the fix.

What is the posture check?

An experimental look at how your spine and hips move from address through impact, compared with tour players, with the key moments marked on your video. It needs down-the-line video, gives feedback on golf technique only and is not medical advice. You can turn it off in Settings.

Can I share my shots?

Yes. Share Video renders the shot with its trace at full or quarter speed, with an optional caption, and opens the share sheet for Messages, Instagram, your coach or Photos. Estimated numbers in the caption are labelled as estimates.

On the course

How does the Course tab work?

It shows a satellite map centred on you and turned to the way you face. Tap anywhere to see how far it is, point your iPhone to read distances along your aim, and see the shots you recorded there. It uses your location only while ShotDraw is open. Before using it in a competition, check that its rules allow distance-measuring devices.

Do I have to allow location?

No. Without it, sessions are named by date and the Course tab can’t show distances. With it, sessions are named after the course or range and shots appear on its map. Your location stays on your iPhone; place names and maps come from Apple Maps.

Privacy and your data

Are my videos uploaded anywhere?

No. All analysis runs on your iPhone, there is no account, and ShotDraw collects no data. A video leaves your iPhone only when you share it yourself. Read the privacy policy.

How do I delete my shots and data?

Press and hold a shot or a session, then choose Delete. Deleting the app removes everything ShotDraw stored. Videos in your Photos library are not affected.
